You can only let down yourself!

The decision to do an additional work related course is a decision that many people don't make easily. It will require them to make time, make an effort and be away from work every so often. Many also fear letting a teacher down, if they fail. They tend to forget that the lecturer is there to assist them. He is not there to judge them.

One of the most dreadful sentences we have all heard once or twice in our lives is; 'You have let me down ?. In most cases it was probably used by people to whom we didn't deliver a promise or appointments when someone arrives late for an appointment. Interestingly enough, it is also a statement made by many teachers at schools when a scholar fails a test. And it is perhaps their expression of disappointment that hits us hardest as 'letting a teacher down' implicates that our future is in jeopardy. Yet teachers are merely servants, appointed to provide a service to the best of their capabilities. Like anybody else, they are expected to do the best they can in performing their job. But the ultimate responsibility lies with the receiver of the service.

Making a child responsible for the ultimate outcome of services rendered might be a bit far-fetched. But it is fair to expect this from adults and to assume that they are aware of decisions they take and the implications these decisions have. And when it is supposed to be in their interest, the least that can be expected is that they are eager and keen to cooperate. It is for this reason that information providers at Makrosafe are called moderators and assessors, instead of lecturers and teachers. First and foremost, they will push hard to ensure learners succeed. But they are also well-aware that they are dealing with adults. Moderators and assessors at Makrosafe don't just bank on their vast knowledge and experience: while most of them have been in their field for many years and have been exposed to many different situations, they all know that each situation and incident is different and that it can be solved with different solutions. Most solutions have been written down in text-book, with the scenarios being easy to understand and remember. But in a fast-evolving world textbook scenarios do not always provide a solution. And it is in exactly these moments that creativity and the ability to adapt and act are the skills that are needed most. It is for that reason that moderators and assessors at Makrosafe particularly look at the effort made by student to soak up knowledge and their engagement in discussions. And as South Africa is a diverse society, discussion and projects could provide interesting insight and perhaps produce some exciting and ground-breaking solutions.

The qualification course in Health & Safety recently introduced by Makrosafe aims to empower even those with no previous experience or education in the field to become a health and safety professional. When the course was put together, the intention was to educate the layman in the street. Makrosafe selected only moderators and assessors who are able to explain even the most complex information as clearly as possible. In the highly unlike case that a student doesn't pass immediately, it would be more a matter of a student being let down by a moderator or assessor than the student letting them down. This situation will only exist temporarily though, as the benchmark is a 100% pass rate and a 200% appreciation level.
