The Class 1300 Handover road show will visit various places in South Africa throughout February 2015.

Class 1300 Iron and Steel Industry handover by the Compensation FundThe Class 1300 Iron and Steel Industry handover by the Compensation Fund road show will be used to inform employers in Class 13 about the changes they can expect when Rand Mutual Assurance takes over the handling of compensation claims for this Class from 28 February 2015.
The Class 1300 Handover has been on the cards since mid-last year. As the Compensation Fund struggled with handling the large volumes of compensation cases in the Iron, Steel, Artificial Limbs, Galvanising, Garages, Metals Industries, etc. (Class 13) it was decided to hand over the complete class to RMA.
Rand Mutual Association has a well-established track record in the management of claims for occupational injuries and diseases in the mining industry. It has also been administering claims for occupational injuries and diseases since 1894. With the Compensation Fund battling with a backlog of almost 12 years for paying out rebate's, the handover is expected to improve the services and speed up processes for affected employees and employers in the Iron & Steel industry. RMA has the ability to finalize claims for total temporary disablement and permanent disability within 3 to 6 weeks, depending on severity of the injury.
Although RMA will handle cases in Class 13, the Compensation Fund remains responsible for overseeing the compliance of the licensee with all the requirements of the COID Act.

The Class 1300 Handover will not change anything for clients of MAKROSAFE. RMA already offers the same benefits as stipulated by the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Disease Act. An official of RMA has confirmed that discounts for MAKROSAFE clients will be calculated annually and that claim numbers will be obtained immediately. But the speed with which RMA concludes cases and the close relationship MAKROSAFE has with them for many years, should reduce waiting time and improve services for companies and employees involved in incidents.
