The NEBOSH International Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety is a qualification for aspiring health and safety professionals. It is designed to provide students with the expertise - wherever in the world they may be working – required to undertake a career as a safety and health practitioner. It also provides a sound basis for progression to an MSc or more specialist study. The NEBOSH International Diploma is modeled on the NEBOSH National Diploma. The key difference between the two awards is in the applicability of legal requirements. The International Diploma takes a risk management approach based on best practice and international standards, such as the International Labour Organisation (ILO) codes of practice. Underpinning knowledge of legal frameworks is included and local laws and cultural factors should form part of the study programme where relevant and appropriate.
The qualification is divided into four units:
- Unit IA – International management of health and safety.
- Unit IB – International control of hazardous agents in the workplace.
- Unit IC – International workplace and work equipment safety.
- Unit DNI – International application of health and safety theory and practice.
Units IA, IB and IC are assessed by a written examination. Unit DNI is a workplace-based assignment, requiring students to conduct a review of health and safety arrangements in their own organization.
Candidates who partake in this course will gain expertise which enables them to assist their employer in managing risk effectively. They also gain practical skills and knowledge to apply which delivers a positive change throughout the workplace. The NEBOSH International Diploma is a university degree-level qualification, offering a route to Masters-level study. It is a qualification to be proud of. This qualification is highly sought after by employers globally. It is recognized and respected throughout the world as a mark of professionalism for health and safety practitioners.
