INTRODUCTION TO FIRST AID TRAINING COURSES

These First Aid training courses will teach the candidate how to handle the most common emergency situations, administer basic life support, and perform prescribed first aid procedures as well as treatment for common injuries and sudden illness until Emergency Medical Services arrive and can take over.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND FIRST AID TRAINING?

  • Workers
  • Supervisors
  • Line Managers
  • Health, Safety and Environmental Practitioners, and
  • Employees who have been legally appointed as the First Aider
  • Any other individual who wishes to become acquainted with the processes and procedures to follow when performing First Aid.

THE PURPOSE OF THE FIRST AID TRAINING COURSES

These courses will equip the candidate with the necessary information and guidelines on how to recognise, handle, and deal with emergency situations. It will not only facilitate the identification of a casualty in distress but also assist the First Aider in helping someone:

  1. Breathe should they be unable to
  2. During cardiac emergencies
  3. Perform CPR on adults
  4. How to take care of basic transmission precautions through the Universal Precaution Principle
  5. Recognise and care for bleeding wounds
  6. Identify and handle sudden illness
  7. Prevent conditions from worsening, and
  8. Promote the recovery of the casualty.

This course shows the candidate how to immobilise muscle, bone, and joint injuries along with reviewing the fundamentals concerned with being a First Aider.

In addition, these First Aid courses also includes:

  1. Emergency scene management
  2. Management of emergency situations, and
  3. An introduction to basic anatomy and physiology

First Aid Training allows for the control of possible emergency situations in the workplace, at home, and outside of these environments.

First Aid Level 2

FIRST AID COURSE OUTCOME

Upon completion of this course, the attending candidate will be able to:

  1. Define their role as an emergency First Aider
  2. Describe how to minimize risks to themselves and others
  3. Identify the need for establishing consent to provide first aid to the casualty in addition to completing an accident report form
  4. Identify prescribed first aid equipment which should be available in the workplace
  5. Describe the safe use of first aid equipment when treating a casualty
  6. Conduct and perform a survey of the emergency scene, a primary assessment of the casualty, and call for help
  7. Assess the casualty’s level of consciousness using the AVPU scale, open the airway of the casualty, check breathing and explain the importance of the recovery position
  8. Demonstrate how to place an unresponsive casualty in the recovery position
  9. Identify the most common medical conditions
  10. Manage a casualty who has a seizure, asthma attack, or an allergic reaction
  11. Recognise the need to commence CPR and demonstrate the administration thereof using a manikin
  12. Describe the identification and treatment of choking with both a partially and completely blocked airway
  13. Identify the types of external bleeding and how to control it
  14. Recognise shock and manage a casualty who is in shock, and
  15. Administer first aid to casualties who have sustained cuts, grazes, bruises, minor burns, scalds, or small splinters.

FIRST AID COURSE KEY CONTENT COVERED

The content of this course is formulated around the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 85 of 1993, General Safety Regulations. The content of the course includes, but is not limited to:

  1. The introduction to and overview of Basic First Aid, Emergency Scene Management, and Patient Management
  2. Managing Emergency Situations, Basic First Aid Principles, and Basic Human Anatomy and Physiology, and
  3. First Aid Principles and Emergency Procedures including Patient Recovery and the Treatment of Common Injuries and Illness.

FIRST AID COURSE ASSESSMENT

The candidate attending the course will be assessed against the outcomes of each element through the completion of a subscribed knowledge assessment. These assessments will cover the essential embedded knowledge as stipulated in the course and will ensure that the candidate can apply the learning to a working situation.

CONDITIONS OF THE FIRST AID COURSE CERTIFICATION

Attending candidates must obtain a pass mark of at least 75% or higher is necessary in each Modular Assessment. Should these conditions have been met, the candidate will receive an accredited Certificate of Completion.

FAQ’s for First Aid Training

CAN I APPLY FIRST AID OUTSIDE MY WORKPLACE?

Yes you can after you have completed and obtained a valid First Aid Certificate.

HOW LONG IS A BASIC FIRST AID, INTERMEDIATE FIRST AID AND ADVANCED FIRST AID CERTIFICATE VALID FOR?

After successful completion of Basic First Aid Training, Intermediate First Aid and Advanced First Aid you will be issued with a certificate that is valid for a period of 3 years.

CAN I PERFORM CPR ON A BABY?

You cannot perform CPR on a baby in the same manner as on an adult, but you will obtain the necessary knowledge on how to perform CPR on a baby by completing a First Aid course.

WILL I BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY THE SYMPTOMS IF A PERSON IS HAVING A HEART ATTACK?

Yes, Basic First Aid training will provide you with the necessary information to identify symptoms of a person having a heart attack.

CAN I GET INFECTED WHEN ASSISTING AN INJURED PERSON?

Yes, you must always ensure that you wear gloves or in an emergency where no gloves are available you can use a plastic bag to cover your hands.
