The NEBOSH National Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management is aimed at those who are required to provide day-to- day advice on fire related issues in the work environment including managers and supervisory staff who need to ensure that their organization meets its responsibilities under fire safety legislation.
This course covers the management of health and safety and in particular fire safety, including legal requirements. It also includes principles of fire explosion, causes and prevention of fire, fire protection in buildings and ensuring the safety of people in the event of fire. The content is designed to equip candidates to undertake fire risk assessments in low risk workplaces. Candidates don’t need any previous health and safety or fire safety knowledge although it should be noted that candidates will be required to write a short report.
The qualification is divided into three units, namely:
- Management of Health and Safety (NGC1).
- Fire Safety and Risk Management (FC1).
- Practical Fire Risk Assessment (FC2).
Students who already passed NGC1 as part of a previous NEBOSH qualification do not need to re-take NGC1, provided it was achieved within the last 5 years. If it was achieved more than 5 years ago, candidates may re-sit the examination without needing to attend the taught class. Students will receive a unit certificate for each unit passed and on successful completion of all units making up the NEBOSH National Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management the student will receive the overall Qualification Parchment.
A fire can have a devastating effect on an organisation thus it is the responsibility of employers and those in control of the premises to ensure that they assess fire risks and take the necessary steps to minimize those risks and safeguard people in the event of a fire. The NEBOSH Fire Safety and Risk Management Certificate is designed to equip holders to help their organisations meet the legal duties. It is believed that 77% of businesses experiencing a fire never fully recover from the damage caused.
This qualification meets academic requirements for Technical Membership (TechIOSH) of IOSH and Associate Membership (AIIRSM) of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM). It enables the candidate to apply for Technician Membership of the Institute of Fire Prevention Officers (TIFPO) and it also meets the academic requirements for Associate Membership (AMIFPO). Persons with the relevant skills and experience may also apply to join the IFPO Fire Risk Assessors Register.
