First Aid Aim

  • The 3 main aims of first aid, commonly referred to as the “3 P’s” are:
    Preserve life
    Prevent further injury
    Promote recovery
  • The First Aider
The First Aider must be aware of the standard of care he/she is able to provide, as this standard of care related directly to the concept of negligence. If the correct standard of care was not provided, the individual will be judged according to hypothetical persons of similar training and experience.
  • The First Responder
A First Responder becomes a vital link between the victim and the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and ultimately the team who will attend to the casualty in the hospital.

The First Responder should work in a systematic manner to:
    Provide basic life support.
Prevent the condition from becoming worse.
    Promote recovery.
Alert the emergency services as necessary (police, fire brigade, ambulance).

    A First Aid Responder should:
    Recognise an emergency.
    Take charge and delegate.
Gather information and provide basic life support.
    Alert the emergency services.
    Support the patient.
Hand the patient over and report.
