Risk assessment decide who might be harmed and how?

It needs to be clear for each hazard that is identified during the risk assessment, who exactly it is that stands a chance of being harmed and how. Identifying typical groups of people employed in the workplace is, therefore, essential.

Each labour force could easily be broken down into smaller groups of employees. And each group could face a different hazard.

Cleaners could possibly be affected by the chemicals used when cleaning while parcel couriers are more likely to suffer from back injury from repeated lifting of boxes.

But different groups can also be identified across the initial groups. New or young employees, new or expectant mothers, people with disabilities and migrant workers could each have their specific requirements as do people who are not in the workplace regularly. The latter could include visitors or contractors.

It is important to engage with each group that has been identified to find out what risk they feel are important or would like solved.

Cutting cost by producing in mass quantity can do wonders for turnover. But when it comes to staff, something different to 'a one size fits all' approach should be considered!
