OHS compliance - Intermediate First Aid (Previously level 2)

Intermediate First Aid Training (Previously level 2) is an essential training program that takes the knowledge acquired in the Basic First Aid Training to the next level. Intermediate First Aid goes in-depth and in detail. It enhances skills and it provides more information that requires First Aiders to be proactive and become practical.

Health and safety compliance: Intermediate First Aid Training (Previously Level 2)

The advanced theoretical and practical training enables students to improve their care of an injured person. The following is taught in the Intermediate First Aid Training;
1. Demonstrate the principles of primary emergency care in the workplace.

A First Aider will be trained to practically show that he/she has adequate knowledge on how to provide primary care for any injured person until the injured person is transferred to health professionals' care.

2. Sustain a basic level of preparedness for health emergencies in the workplace.
First aiders will gain skills to demonstrate a certain level of preparedness to react and respond to a health emergency. They will also learn how to prioritise on steps to take in their actions.

3. Assess and manage an emergency scene in the workplace.
First Aiders are trained to manage an emergency scene to prevent further fatalities. They will also be able to prevent the current incident from spiraling out of control.

4. Demonstrate primary emergency life support for adults, children and infants. This life support will be according to current international protocols.

Intermediate First Aid Training

First Aiders are trained to be able to provide life support to all age groups. They should do these duties in line with standards stipulated in the Act.

5. Explain and manage shock
Intermediate First Aid Training equips learners with skills on how to deal and manage shock on fellow employees if an incident happens.

6. Conduct secondary assessment of the sick and / or injured person. They will also learn how to provide appropriate primary emergency care within the workplace.

First Aiders who partake in Intermediate First Aid training are also educated on how to conduct advanced assessment of the sick. If needs be, they can perform basic care in the workplace before health professional arrive.

7. Keep records of the incident / accident
Intermediate level trained First Aiders are trained on how to systematically record incidents as well as how to store such documents safely.

Intermediate First Aid Training coupled with Basic First Aid can enable a First Aider to perform basic care that can save a life. First Aiders are a required by the Occupational Health and Safety Act to be present in all workplaces for every 50 or 100 employees. Companies with hazardous workplaces are encouraged to go an extra mile and send their First Aiders for up to Advanced First Aid training.
