Forklift in the workplace

The power and force that is combined in a forklift can, when used correctly, make life easier for many in the workplace. However, if the power is misused it can become a deadly combination. Forklifts need special care to perform their duties effectively.

A driver of a forklift is most vulnerable to injuries; hence an inspector should ensure that his safety is secured. A risk assessment is necessary to investigate if a forklift has a sound and strong roof. This could protect the driver from falling objects. When the forklift is used to transport or lift hazardous liquids it is essential that the forklift is equipped with glass panels to avoid injuries in case of spillage.

Other essential parts of inspection to ensure the safety of a forklift driver are the condition of the seat and the seat belt. A broken seat is not only a safety but a health hazard as well. The role of a seat belt on a forklift could be under estimated because a forklift generally moves at a slower speed, but it is essential that it is firmly fitted to prevent the driver falling out when a forklift tilts, which could see the driver ending up underneath the heavy vehicle. Companies, therefore, should also have strict rules regarding wearing the seatbelt, a rule which adherence too should be monitored too.

A steering mechanism of a forklift should be checked regularly and deviations should be reported immediately. A forklift could pose a serious safety hazard if it breaks down in the middle of an operation. Employers are advised to take it upon themselves to ensure that forklifts are exempted to a pre check-up before they are used especially after staying a period of time un-used.

Control levers need a thorough inspection during a risk assessment. An inspector should take a practical inspection on the levers by establishing if they move to any required direction smoothly without any struggles. Malfunctioning control levers could cause a forklift to halt in the middle of an operation and cause danger.

For the safety of employees working in the vicinity of a forklift, it is essential that a forklift siren and reverse light are functioning. Sirens and reverse lights are the most obvious ways to warn other employees around when the forklift starts moving.

It is disastrous to have a forklift with faulty breaks. It could lose control and plough on objects around and hit employees who are adjacent. Employers are encouraged to insure that their forklifts are checked regularly. Brake fluid and pads should be checked during a risk assessment. Brake pads that are ruled out as worn out or unsuitable should be replaced immediately.

The back rest of a forklift should be assessed careful if it is in good condition. A faulty back rest could mean loads would be unstable and collapse causing a hazard for employees around. Alongside with the inspection of the back, an inspector would inspect if the forklift is adequately lubricated. This also contributes to a defect back rest if it is not done regularly.

Though I have listed a number of areas of inspection, the inspection of a forklift is a wide scope job. Some elements that should also be considered during an inspection are, gauges, axles, mast and chain, gas shut valves and the horn, to mention but a few.

Safe forklifts are a perfect tool to lift the company to the next level and increase productivity.
