1. How do I acquire professional status with a membership body?

NEBOSH Certificate Qualifications

Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH)
Holders of the following qualifications are entitled to Associate Membership (AIOSH) of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). These qualifications also meet the academic requirements for Technical Membership (Tech IOSH) of IOSH.

  • National Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety
  • National Certificate in Construction Health and Safety
  • National Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management
  • International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety
  • International Certificate in Construction Health and Safety
  • International Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management
  • National Diploma Part 1 (no longer available to new students)

International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM)
The above seven NEBOSH qualifications are also accredited by the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM) as meeting the academic requirements for Associate Membership (AIIRSM).

Association for Project Safety (APS)
The National and the International Certificates in Construction Health and Safety meet the headline entrance criteria requirements for Construction Safety Associate membership (AaPS) of the Association for Project Safety (APS).

Institute of Fire Prevention Officers (IFPO)
The following qualifications meet the qualification requirements for Technician membership (TIFPO) of the Institute of Fire Prevention Officers (IFPO) and each qualification meets the academic requirements for Associate Membership (AMIFPO).

  • National Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management
  • International Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management

Qualification holders with the relevant skills and experience may also apply to join the IFPO Fire Risk Assessors register.

NB:This only applies to candidates sitting the April 2013 specification (or later) for either qualification. Examinations for the April 2013 specifications commenced from 1 January 2014.

Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM)
The following qualifications meet the requirements for Technician Membership (TechCIWEM) of the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM):

  • Certificate in Environmental Management
  • National Certificate in Environmental Management (no longer available to new students)

IEMA
Holders of the Certificate in Environmental Management meet the academic requirements for IEMA Associate (AIEMA) level membership provided that they apply within three years of achieving their Certificate.

NEBOSH Diploma Qualifications
IOSH
The following NEBOSH qualifications are accredited by IOSH as meeting their requirements for Graduate Membership (Grad IOSH), and after completion of IOSH's Initial Professional Development Scheme; Chartered Membership (CMIOSH).

  • National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety
  • International Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety
  • National Diploma Part 2 (no longer available to new students)

IIRSM
The above three NEBOSH Diploma-level qualifications are also accredited by the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM) as meeting the academic requirements for Membership (MIIRSM).

The following qualification meets the academic requirements for IIRSM Specialist Membership (SIIRSM):

  • National Diploma in Environmental Management

APS
Holders of either the NEBOSH National or International Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety and either the NEBOSH National or International Certificate in Construction Health and Safety meet the headline entrance criteria requirements for Registered Construction Safety Practitioner (RMaPS) membership of the Association for Project Safety (APS).

CIWEM
The following qualification meets the qualification requirements for non-chartered Member (MCIWEM) of the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) for holders achieving the overall qualification from 1 February 2009. Progression to chartered membership is a further opportunity:

  • National Diploma in Environmental Management

IEMA
Holders of the Diploma in Environmental Management meet the academic requirements for IEMA Practitioner (PIEMA) level membership and will have their application fast tracked, provided that they apply within three years of achieving their Diploma.

2. How do I check if a person holds a NEBOSH qualification?

If you have a copy of the qualification parchment, we can verify within 5 working days whether it is genuine or not.

If you do not have a copy of the qualification parchment, we can still verify whether or not the individual holds one of our qualifications. However, in order for us to comply with the Data Protection Act, such requests can only be processed if the request is received in writing; using the qualification verification request form. Disclosure will not be made in response to an enquiry via the telephone.

3. What level are NEBOSH Certificate qualifications?

The following NEBOSH Certificate qualifications are rated at Level 6 in the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF):

  • National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety
  • National Certificate in Construction Health and Safety
  • National Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management
  • National Certificate in Environmental Management
  • National Certificate in the Management of Health and Well-Being at Work.
  • International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety
  • International Certificate in Construction Health and Safety
  • International Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management

SCQF Level 6 is comparable to NQF/QCF Level 3 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, or A-level standard. A chart issued by the regulators comparing qualification frameworks and levels in the UK and Ireland is available here:

4. How much does it cost to study?
Course prices are determined by the course provider and vary depending on a number of factors, including the format of the course.

5. When will I receive my result?
For written examinations, the results date will be stated on the candidate's examination entry confirmation. All results (including those for written assignments) should be received within ten weeks from the date of the examination or submission of assignment.

6. How long will it take?

This will depend on which course provider and what qualification you choose to study.

7. I have achieved a NEBOSH Diploma. May I use designatory letters after my name?

Holders of the following qualifications may use the specified designatory letters after their name:

  • NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety (August 2004,
    September 2006 and February 2010 specifications)

  • NEBOSH National Diploma Part 2 in Occupational Safety and Health (September

  • NEBOSH National Diploma in Environmental Management (March 2008, September
    2010 specifications)

  • NEBOSH Specialist Diploma in Environmental Management (December 1992,

8. Which are the best course providers for NEBOSH qualifications?

NEBOSH accredit a number of course providers offering a course of study leading to each of our qualifications. All course providers meet minimum requirements in order to achieve and maintain accreditation with NEBOSH.
